Chapter Thirteen

Paris. City of lovers. Drivel to appeal to the masses. Or so he’d always told himself. It was just another city, albeit a rather old and exceptionally beautiful one. The tourists were as careless as anywhere else. It was just another place to make a living.

But, of course, this time, he wasn’t alone. Lacey curled beside him with a movie playing on her laptop. She had one earbud, and he had the other. She sprawled over the armrest and rested against his arm. The cozy arrangement was the best way for them to watch the spunky heroine and dashing hero save the day. The film provided an excellent distraction from the lack of exits and the miles of empty air beneath them. It was strange to be comfortable with someone so far into his personal space, but her warmth and bright chatter and even her appalling food preferences had become part of his daily routine.

“Not too Hollywood hokey for you?” he asked when the credits rolled. “I mean, they did ride off into the sunset.”

“Yes, but she didn’t hang around waiting for him to save her…they saved each other.” She grabbed his arm and checked his watch. “Can we watch the second one?”

“Alas, no. I think the flight attendants will be telling us to put our toys away soon.”

She tipped her head and looked at him. The warmth of her cheek seeped through his sleeve. “We could watch it when we get to the hotel.”

“We’re going to one of the most exciting and romantic places in the world, and you want to hole up in a hotel room and watch movies?”

She flickered a winsome glance through her lashes. “There are other things we could do in a hotel room.”

“I’m well aware.” He ignored the fluttering eyelashes. “Except we’re about to land in Paris, not London, remember?”

“Can’t blame a girl for trying. We could check out the gym. Maybe I’ll beat you this time.”

“In the pool? Not unless you grow about six inches before this plane lands.” He smirked, safe in the knowledge that feminine wiles had no influence on height.

“Fine, but you know I can beat you with weights.”

“Just because you can lift something, it doesn’t mean you should.”

“I like to test boundaries.”

He huffed a sigh of resignation. “Yeah. I’ve noticed.”

Dan didn’t check out the gym when they arrived at the latest hotel. He followed a bellman to his own room and unpacked with his usual precision. Bright, jewel-toned linens and objets d’art formed the basis of the sleek and modern décor, along with a few framed prints that looked like someone’s kid threw paint at a canvas. Everything featured clean lines and no ruffled anything, thank you very much. But was it maybe a bit…sterile? He and his minimal belongings were lost in so much space. Movies—or another form of recreation—in Lacey’s room was more tempting by the second.

His phone chirped, and he grabbed it, grateful for any distraction.

“Danny!”

“Hey, sis. What’s up?” The greeting was purely a matter of form—he could almost feel her vibrating with excitement through the phone.
